Matelasse coverlets by Bates Mill Store Bedspreads

Matelasse Heritage coverlets are woven from the highest grade cotton in Lewiston, Maine, on Jacquard Looms.  The same city where Benjamin Bates began Bates Manufacturing in 1850.

They are produced at Maine Heritage Weavers, which began 5 years ago by former Bates Fabrics employees. Woven on similar looms as Bates, matelasse coverlets are available in many colors and designs including Heritage. Heritage (formerly known as Heirloom) is a repeat pattern of a circular and leaf design and is available in bedspread sizes, throws, and shams as well.

Bedspreads are offered with a luxurious string fringe and coverlets feature pom-pom fringe.

The employees at Maine Heritage Weavers know how to weave elegant cotton coverlets.  Most of them worked for the legendary Bates Fabrics before the textile giant closed its doors.  Many of them are 3rd or 4th generation textile mill workers, taught from their parents and grandparents their skilled craft.

Heritage and Martha's Choice and Heritage are two of the designs woven by Maine Heritage Weavers.  Martha's Choice is a candlewick (also referred to as a chenille or terry) and Heritage is a matelasse featuring a repeating circular design.  Coverlets are finished with a pom-pom fringe and matching shams are available.

Luxury Coverlets have been woven in Lewiston, Maine, for over one hundred fifty years. 

The celebrated Bates textiles set about interweaving matelasse coverlets in the former 1850's in manufacturing plants situated on the Androscoggin River.  Bates textiles is no more, nonetheless the employees at Maine Heritage Weavers constituted almost entirely previous employees of Bates.

Due to the fact that most woven throws are imported, woven luxury coverlets made in the USA are becoming more and more difficult to find.

There is one exception, however, and that is luxury coverlets woven by Maine Heritage Weavers, a Maine, USA, based textile company.  This company was started by several Maine craftsmen and craftswomen, all former employees of the former Bates Fabrics, the world renown manufacturer of bates style bedspreads, throws, shams and coverlets.

Jacquard basic weaving produces some of the finest cotton bedspreads, throws, shams, and luxury coverlets. 

The Jacquard loom is the backbone of maine heritage weavers, a company consisting of former Bates Fabric employees in Lewiston, Maine.

The Jacquard loom is named after its inventor, a Frenchman named J. M. Jacquard.  The Jacquard process involves a never ending belt of cards that are punched with holes arranged to produce a pattern weave.  The products produced by the Jacquard Loom are widely recognized as the best money can buy. 

Maine Heritage Weavers is very proud of its heritage and ability to use the Jacquard loom to produce a product of incredible quality.  The coverlets produced by the Jacquard loom are truly loomed to be heirloomed.

Matelasse woven coverlets are still manufactured in Maine.  Using the same type of looms used by the fomer Bates Fabrics, Maine Heritage Weavers employees have the capability to design and weave the matelasse in a variety of styles and colors.

Heritage, one of the oldest matelasse designs in America is still quite popular.  It is available in coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe, and bedspread sizes with a luxurious string fringe. 

In addition to adding designs, Maine Heritage Weavers has been increasing the color selections.  Solid colors include white and antique.  Two-tone colors, which really enhances the design, is available in linen, sage, french blue, wedgewood blue or quartz.
