Matelasse coverlets by Bates Mill Store Bedspreads

Queen cotton coverlets and bedspreads are woven in cotton yarn, producing a fuzzy pile effect.  The yarn protrudes from all sides of the bedspread or coverlet and therefore provides a much softer feel.

Luxury throws made in the USA are uncommon.  Terry loop, made in Maine coverlets and throws are very rare. 

Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine is one of the very last American textile mills weaving candlewicks on Jacquard looms. 

Martha's Choice is one of the oldest designs available and the only candlewick throw.  Many brides during the 1950's and 1960's received Martha's Choice (also remembered as George Washington's Choice) bedspreads as wedding gifts.  A coordinating throw is a wonderful anniversary or birthday present.

Coverlets are 100% high grade, preshrunk cotton and are available in white or antique, in pom-pom fringe or string fringe.  Custom sizes, made-to-order, are offered as well.

Martha's Choice and American Tradition woven by Maine Heritage Weavers are examples of candlewicks, also known as terry loop. Candlewick bedspreads were named so because the length of the tuft (or terry loop) on the bedspread was as long as a candle's wick. 

Martha's Choice, one of www.mhweavers.com most popular designs is available in solid colors of white or antique, and two-tone colors of blue/white or sage/white.  It is also available in coverlet sizes. American Tradition is available in white or antique.  These bedspreads and coverlets are preshrunk, machine washable and will not fade due to the high quality materials used in the manufacturing process.

Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures the finest matelasse bedspreads and coverlets in Lewiston, Maine.

The newest design from Maine Heritage Weavers is Tuscany!  Woven Tuscany Bedspreads are woven with the highest quality cotton yarns.

We are proud to introduce "Tuscany" as the newest addition to our matelasse collection. This elegant pattern was taken from the archives of America's "attic," the Smithsonian Institution, but its grape and vine pattern and floral motif evoke images of the Tuscany region of Italy. The puffed matelasse technique defines the design, giving it a dimensional look and feel that is elegant and rich. The bedspread and matching shams are 100% cotton, machine washable and will not shrink.

Queen Elizabeth is an authentic reproduction of an original handwoven masterpiece dating back to the first Elizabethan Era before becoming popular in Colonial America. Elegant center medallion and flowers woven in an intricate "puffed" pattern give grace and clarity to this classic design.  It is woven in solid white and antique colors and two-tone colors include:  linen/antique, sage/antique, french blue/antique, quartz/antique and wedgewood blue/white.

Heritage features a repeat pattern of circle and leaf design.  Heritage is also available in coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe and throws. 

Matelasse and candlewick bedspreads are machine washable, will not shrink nor fade because of the quality yarn and dyes used in the manufacturing process.

The Jacquard loom is the backbone of Maine Heritage Weavers, a company consisting of former Bates Fabric employees in Lewiston, Maine. Jacquard loomed luxury USA coverlets are woven of the highest quality cotton and will not shrink.  They are machine washable and will last for many years.

The Jacquard loom is named after its inventor, a Frenchman named J. M. Jacquard.  The Jacquard process involves a never ending belt of cards that are punched with holes arranged to produce a pattern weave.  The products produced by the Jacquard Loom are widely recognized as the best money can buy. 

Maine Heritage Weavers is very proud of its heritage and ability to use the Jacquard loom to produce a product of incredible quality.  The coverlets and bedspreads produced by the Jacquard loom are truly loomed to be heirloomed.

Luxury Candlewick Martha's Choice coverlets and throws are manufactured at Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine.  Also remembered as George Washington's Choice, Martha's Choice is still one of the most popular candlewick designs.  Martha's Choice is also woven as bedspread.

George chose the original of this design for his bride. The original weave, older than Christianity, was lost when textile machinery replaced skilled weavers. Bates Fabrics had recaptures this weaving art and former employees continue this tradition at Maine Heritage Weavers.
