Due to the fact that most woven throws are imported from Portugal and China, luxury USA matelasse coverlets made in the USA are becoming more and more difficult to find.

There is one exception, however, and that is elegant woven cotton coverlets by Maine Heritage Weavers, a Maine, USA, based textile company.  Maine Heritage Weavers, started by several Maine craftsmen and craftswomen, are all former employees of the former Bates Fabrics, the world renown manufacturer of Bates-style [tag]bedspreads[/tag], [tag]coverlets[/tag] and blankets.

Maine Heritage Weavers of Lewiston, Maine, USA, operates out of the same buildings that housed the Bates Fabrics operation.  The manufacture 100% high quality chenille-type (candlewick) and matelasse (trapunto) bedspreads, coverlets, pillow shams and throws on Jacquard and dobby looms.

The Jacquard loom is the backbone of Maine Heritage Weavers, a USA company consisting of former Bates Fabric employees in Lewiston, Maine.

The [tag]Jacquard[/tag] loom is named after its inventor, a Frenchman named J. M. Jacquard.  The Jacquard process involves a never ending belt of cards that are punched with holes arranged to produce a pattern weave.  The process is similar to the way a player piano operates with the metal cylinder choosing the notes to play.  The products produced by the Jacquard Loom are widely recognized as the best money can buy.

Cotton luxury terry coverlets have been woven in Lewiston, Maine, for over one hundred fifty years. Cotton Martha Washington's Choice coverlets are of candlewick (terry loop) construction.

The celebrated Bates Fabrics set about interweaving luxurious woven [tag]candlewick[tag] and [tag]matelasse[/tag] bedspreads and coverlets in the former 1850's in manufacturing plants situated on the Androscoggin River.  Bates textiles is no more, nonetheless the employees at Maine Heritage Weavers constituted mostly of previous employees of Bates.
