Matelasse coverlets by Bates Mill Store Bedspreads

Matelasse Queen Elizabeth bedspreads are woven in Lewiston, Maine, USA at one of the Bates Mill buildings.  Queen Elizabeth, also remembered as Elizabethan Court, is one of the oldest vintage matelasse designs offered by Maine Heritage Weavers. 

This very popular Queen Elizabeth design is an authentic vintage reproduction of an original handwoven masterpiece dating back to the first Elizabethan Era before becoming popular in Colonial America. Elegant center medallion and flowers woven in an intricate "puffed" pattern give grace and clarity to this classic museum-designed woven bedspread.

These 100 percent cotton bedspreads are loomed to be heirloomed on Jacquard looms similar to those used by the legendary Bates Fabrics.  Bedspreads are preshrunk and machine washable and will not fade.

These bedspreads are available in a variety of colors including sage and french blue/antique and make an excellent addition to any decor. Matching pillow shams and throws are offered.  Free fabric swatches are always available.

Chenille and matelasse Luxury woven twin bedspreads measure 80"x110" from Maine Heritage Weavers. Ribcord bedspreads measure 76"x110, are available in many colors and are used widely in colleges, nursing facilities, and fire departments.

Due to the fact that most woven throws are imported from Portugal and China, USA woven trapunto coverlets are becoming more and more difficult to find.

Jacquard weaving produces some of the finest cotton luxury bedding including bedpreads, throws, pillow shams, and coverlets. 

The Jacquard loom is the backbone of Maine Heritage Weavers, a USA company consisting of former Bates Fabric employees in Lewiston, Maine.

The Jacquard loom is named after its inventor, a Frenchman named J. M. Jacquard.  The Jacquard process involves a never ending belt of cards that are punched with holes arranged to produce a pattern weave.  The process is similar to the way a player piano operates with the metal cylinder choosing the notes to play.  The products produced by the Jacquard Loom are widely recognized as the best money can buy. 

Maine Heritage Weavers is very proud of its heritage and ability to use the Jacquard loom to produce bedding of incredible quality.  These luxurious bedspreads, coverlets, and throws produced by the Jacquard loom are truly "loomed to be heirloomed".  Luxury blankets are also woven at this famous bedspread manufacturer.

USA woven Martha Washington’s Choice throws are manufactured with the highest quality cotton at Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine. Also remembered as George Washington’s Choice, Martha Washington’s Choice is still one of the most popular vintage candlewick (terry-loop) designs. Martha Washington’s Choice is also woven in coverlet and bedspread sizes with matching pillow shams in addition to throws.

George chose the original of this design for his bride. The original weave, older than Christianity, was lost when textile machinery replaced skilled weavers. Bates Fabrics had recaptures this weaving art and former employees continue this tradition at Maine Heritage Weavers. Many brides during the 1950s received bedspreads in this pattern. Throws, especially luxury USA woven throws, make wonderful anniversary presents.

Available in white or antique, this design is also available in coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe and bedspread sizes with string fringe. Free fabric swatches are available.

Vintage bedspreads woven in the USA are becoming more and more difficult to find in view of the fact most throws are now woven in manufacturing plants located in China, Portugal and other far away countries. 

One exception, however, is cotton vintage bedspreads woven by a Maine, USA, based company, Maine Heritage Weavers.  This company was started by several Maine craftsmen and women, former Bates employees, the world renown manufacturer of Bates style throws, bedspreads, coverlets, and pillow shams in both terry-loop (candlewick) and matelasse construction.

Heirloom Heritage matelasse coverlets are woven from the highest grade cotton on Jacquard looms in Lewiston, Maine.  The same city where Benjamin Bates began Bates Manufacturing in 1850.
