The employees at Maine Heritage Weavers know how to weave Maine's best luxury woven throws.  Many of them worked for the legendary Bates Fabrics and Bates of Maine before the textile giant closed its doors.  In addition, many of them are 3rd or 4th generation textile mill workers, taught from their parents and grandparents their skilled craft.  When Bates closed, they were determined to continue weaving high quality bedspreads, coverlets and throws.

Matelasse styles Abigail Adams and Heritage are two of the designs woven by Maine Heritage Weavers in bedspread and throw sizes.  Both are from their popular vintage matelasse collection and treasured favorite designs.  Heritage's matelasse design of repeating leaves and circles are also offered in coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe. Matching shams and throws are offered as well.

Woven Martha Washington's Choice luxury bedspreads and throws are manufactured at Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine with the highest quality cotton available.  Martha Washington's Choice (also remembered as George Washington's Choice) is the most popular candlewick style (hobnail) designs.  This popular vintage throw is available with string fringe or pom-pom fringe in either white or antique.

George Washington chose the original of this design for his bride. The original weave, older than Christianity, was lost when textile machinery replaced skilled weavers.  Bates Fabrics had recaptures this weaving art and former employees continue this tradition at Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine on similar  dobby and Jacquard looms.

This popular design is also available in standard coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe and standard bedspread zes with string fringe.  Throws are offered with either fringe. There is one exception, however, and that is decorative vintage bedding woven by a Maine, USA, based company, Maine Heritage Weavers.  This Maine textile company was started by several Maine craftsmen and women, former employees of Bates Fabrics, the world renown manufacturer of Bates style throws, shams, coverlets and bedspreads and coverlets in both terry-loop (candlewick) and trapunto construction.

Famous cotton hobnail woven coverlets such as Martha Washington's Choice woven coverlets have been woven in Lewiston, Maine, for over one hundred fifty years. Martha Washington's Choice coverlets are of hobnail (terry loop) construction also referred to as candlewick or chenille.

The celebrated Bates Fabrics set about interweaving luxurious woven candlewick (terry-loop) and trapunto (matelasse) bedspreads and coverlets in the former 1850s in manufacturing plants situated on the Androscoggin River. Bates textiles is no more, nonetheless the employees at Maine Heritage Weavers constituted mostly of previous employees of Bates.
