<strong>Bates-style Martha Washington’s Choice bedspreads</strong> are great examples of the finest USA woven chenille type (or candlewick) bed coverings still very popular in America and still made in America. Vintage candlewick bedspreads such as Martha Washington’s Choice and American Tradition can be referred to as “chenille”, "hobnail" or “terry loop” style.

This beautiful woven style has a needlework effect that produces a 3-D effect through patterns of French knots, or uncut loops forming a fabric pile. Martha Washington’s Choice bedspread is an example of terry-loop (also known as hobnail, chenille or candlewick) construction. American Tradition is a lighter weight design and more suitable for warmer climates.

Queen Elizabeth bedspreads by Maine Heritage Weavers are woven in Lewiston, Maine at one of the Bates Mill buildings by former Bates Fabrics employees.  Queen Elizabeth, also remembered as Elizabethan Court, is one of the most popular matelasse designs offered by Maine Heritage Weavers.

Employees at Maine Heritage Weavers know how to weave Maine's best woven coverlets.  Most of them worked for the legendary Bates Fabrics and Bates of Maine before the textile giant closed its doors.  In addition, many of them are 3rd or 4th generation textile mill workers, taught from their parents and grandparents their skilled craft.  When Bates closed, they were determined to continue weaving high quality blankets, bedspreads, coverlets and throws.
