Queen Elizabeth matelasse bedspreads by Maine Heritage Weavers are woven in Lewiston, Maine at one of the Bates Mill buildings by former Bates Fabrics employees.  Queen Elizabeth, also remembered as Elizabethan Court, is one of the most popular matelasse designs offered by Maine Heritage Weavers. 

Our Queen Elizabeth design is an authentic vintage reproduction of an original handwoven masterpiece dating back to the first Elizabethan Era before becoming popular in Colonial America. Employees at Maine Heritage Weavers know how to weave Maine's best woven bedding.  Most of them worked for the legendary Bates Fabrics and Bates of Maine before the textile giant closed its doors.  In addition, many of them are 3rd or 4th generation textile mill workers, taught from their parents and grandparents their skilled craft.  When Bates closed, they were determined to continue weaving high quality blankets, bedspreads, coverlets and throws.

Here at the Bates Mill Store we carry all of the MHW line. Heritage and Abigail Adams are two of the most popular colonial designs that we carry. Both are matelasse designs available in bedspread and throw sizes.  Both are from their popular vintage matelasse collection and treasured favorite designs. 

Heritage's matelasse vintage design of repeating leaves and circles are also offered in coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe. Matching shams and throws are offered as well.

Woven matelasse Jacquards including coverlets, bedspreads and throws are still featured at our Bates Mill Store.  Jacquards made in America are becoming more and more difficult to find in view of the fact most throws are now woven in manufacturing facilities located in Portugal, China, Italy and other far away countries.

One exception, however, is bedding woven by a Maine, USA, based company, Maine Heritage Weavers. This small textile company was started by several Maine craftsmen and women, former employees of Bates Fabrics, the world renown manufacturer of Bates style throws, shams, coverlets and bedspreads in both terry-loop (candlewick) and trapunto (matelasse) construction.
