The Bates Mill Store carries the finest U.S. woven bedding available. American woven vintage Jacquard coverlets and bedspreads are becoming more and more difficult to find in view of the fact most throws are now woven in manufacturing facilities located in Portugal, China, Italy and other far away countries.
One exception, however, is bedding woven by a Maine, USA, based company, Maine Heritage Weavers. This small textile company was started by several Maine craftsmen and women, former employees of Bates Fabrics, the world renown manufacturer of Bates style throws, shams, coverlets and bedspreads in both terry-loop (candlewick) and trapunto (matelasse) construction. Maine Heritage Weavers operates out of the same buildings that housed the Bates operation located along the Androscoggin River in Lewiston, Maine many years ago.
These 100% cotton decorative luxury coverlets are available in a variety of colors and colonial designs, such as Queen Elizabeth and Abigial Adams Free fabric swatches of their popular candlewick and matelasse bedding are available at www.batesmillstore.com.

Bates-style Martha Washington’s Choice bedspreads are great examples of the finest USA woven chenille type (or candlewick) bed coverings still very popular in America and still made in America. Vintage candlewick bedspreads such as Martha Washington’s Choice and American Tradition can be referred to as “chenille”, "hobnail" or “terry loop” style.
This beautiful woven style has a needlework effect that produces a 3-D effect through patterns of French knots, or uncut loops forming a fabric pile. Martha Washington’s Choice bedspread is an example of terry-loop (also known as hobnail, chenille or candlewick) construction. American Tradition is a lighter weight design and more suitable for warmer climates.
Candlewicks are very popular for blankets and other bedding produced by Maine Heritage Weavers, Inc., of Lewiston, Maine. Their website is www.mhweavers.com. Our company, the Bates Mill Store, www.batesmillstore.com has been carrying USA made terry chenille bedspreads for over 50 years, all of which are woven in Lewiston, Maine, USA.
